Terpenes are natural aromatic compounds found in cannabis (and many fruits, herbs, and flowers). They’re responsible for the smell, flavor, and subtle effects of different strains—why one strain smells citrusy while another is earthy or piney.
Beyond aroma, terpenes work alongside cannabinoids to shape the overall experience.
Why Terpenes Matter
Terpenes help influence:
-
How a strain smells and tastes
-
Whether effects feel uplifting, calming, or balanced
-
The overall character of the experience
They play a key role in the entourage effect, enhancing how cannabinoids like THC and CBD feel.

Terpenes + Cannabinoids = The Entourage Effect
Terpenes don’t work alone. When combined with cannabinoids, they create a more well-rounded and nuanced experience than any single compound on its own.
That’s why two strains with similar THC levels can feel completely different.
How to Read a Terpene Profile
When viewing a product’s terpene profile, look for:
-
Dominant terpenes (top 2–3 listed)
-
Aroma descriptions that match your preference
-
Balanced profiles rather than just high THC
Choosing by terpenes often leads to better results than choosing by strain name alone.
